"Even without trawling through that big automotive dustbin called America, there was no shortage of material. The worrying thing is that so many of the world's truly bad cars were British." After destroying the Yugo, this brief photo montage shows four British cars from the past (the Austin Allegro, Austin Maxi, Princess and the Morris Marina) that apparentely left a lot to be desired. The thing I'm too young to remember these cars being around and I've never ridden or driven any of them. Were they really that bad? I've heard people make fun or the Marina and the Allegro many times, they sound like the Vectra of the 70s, the kind of car your grandad who knew nothing about cars used to drive. I don't want to start an Explorer4x4-esque arguement, but try to remove personal preference and tell me what they were really like, did they have loads of mechanical faults and other weakness? -- Last edit: 2006-11-17 18:14:41 |

I'll start this off by admitting I have no experience with British cars. However, I think it basically amounts to what you said, that they were the Vectras of the 70's, combined with the fact that British Leyland had horrendous quality control at the time. |

It seems like British Leyland (or BMC even) was another word for crap! The British Motor Industry according to Clarkson and other Top Gear presenters: Aston Martin, Bentley, Roll-Royce, Jaguar, Lotus: Good Austin, British Leyland (or anything related to it), Vauxhall, Rover (1980s onwards): Rubbish By the way I'm referring to brands as a whole, there are still some cars made by those companies he approves of (like the Vauxhall VX220). -- Last edit: 2006-11-17 18:34:21 |
