This is not an E93A, it is an E493A with the later front wings and grille similar to a V-8 Pilot grille. The E93A has a grille with horizontal bars and was discontinued in favour of this model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1948_Ford_Prefect_E93A.jpg -- Last edit: 2014-04-04 08:15:08 |

Wow, thanks johnfromStaffs -- made my day! Right hand drive? can't tell for sure ....don't see a steering wheel on the left. So many unusual cars like this one hidden in Highway Patrol backgrounds and quick cuts -- Last edit: 2014-04-04 04:05:36 |

Ford UK made a great effort to export in the dark days after WW2, LHD variants of these smaller cars were aimed at USA, and there must have been some success, although it is rather odd to see a Prefect with a radio antenna. |

Radio was big in LA during the '50s and growing fast. A constant freeway companion for commuters who were a captive audience for advertisers. Still true today. So the radio is no surprise, even if it's an aftermarket addition. Don't recall seeing a '49 Prefect during the time, although the car seems somehow familiar. But we had plenty of English Fords like the ones pictured below. Pretty common. johnfromStaffs, I've tried page-posting a couple English Fords from background scenes -- they got rejected by the moderators, but maybe that's because I've mis-identified them. Please look and make corrections if you would -- I'm pretty weak on the English & European models. ![]() This one appeared in "Hot Rod," episode 2.07 @19.01 and 19:34 ’53-’56 English Ford. 100E? Model names varied here in the states. Most likely Consul? Maybe Anglia, Prefect or Zephyr. ![]() ..and here's one from episode 4.02 @0:55. Opening scene at the Glendale train station. ’53-’56 English Ford. Looks like it could be the same car as above. Here's an ad for a later model. http://blog.modernmechanix.com/compact-yet-roomy-thats-english/ What are your thoughts? -- Last edit: 2014-04-04 15:58:48 |

They are both English Fords built between 1951 and 1956. There are detail differences between the Consul EOTA, 4 cylinder 1508cc, and the Zephyr EOTTA, 6 cylinder 2262cc, concerning the chromium plate details, and the length between the front of the car and the A-post. The Zephyr had a longer engine, so a larger distance, and it's most noticeable as the distance between the back of the front wheelarch, and the door shut line. There was a third model, the Zodiac, which was a Zephyr with deluxe trim and more chrome. If pushed, I would say that the top thumb looks Consul, and the bottom one I can't see enough detail to tell for sure, but I think the longer chrome strip on the number plate light says Zephyr, neither is a 100E. The 1953 100E Anglia/Prefect range followed the large car styling cues, but were smaller and a bit more squared off. The Anglia had two doors, the Prefect had four, we did not use the Tudor/Fordor names post WW2. The history of these models gets complex, with facelifts and such until deletion of the last of the range in 1962 I think. -- Last edit: 2014-04-04 18:29:49 |

Not the same car, then? I'll try to page-post again. Thanks, johnfromStaffs |

I enjoyed oddsox' link to the Prefect ad; I learned to drive on a slightly earlier (1955) model. It was pretty and nicely proportioned, but it had a three-speed manual gearbox and a side-valve (flathead) motor dating back to 1934 (in the Ford Ten [C]). Before I passed my test, I had to drive it from near Birmingham to Newcastle-upon-Tyne - 206 miles - and 56 years later it is still one of the most exhausting drives of my life. |
