With the cross bar under the lights I think it might be a just-pre-war Lea Francis - maybe? If so a very rare car. |

To quote Sedgwick and Gillies: - Lea-Francis 12hp/13hp Production 83 including 13hp Sports, 6-light saloon, 4-light saloon, drophead coupe, tourer, various specials. 1938 to 1940. With two engines and all that body choice on a car that totalled 83 units, it's no wonder Lea-Francis found difficulty making cars profitably. |

I can't offer any knowledge of Lea-Fs, but that photo of FGJ 800 is the same as a b+w one in the Sedgewick & Gillies bible jfs often uses (although has been photo-shopped to take out background stuff). Agree there are differences - FGJ has a lower bumper so more roll on wings, plus a lower position door handle. Whether these are significant differences (plus possibly the hood shape??) are questions beyond my pay grade. |

The picture is not very precise, presumably grainy shots did not matter so much for a film rather than a still. I'm not certain on Lea-Francis, nor am I certain that this is a Triumph Gloria, the radiator seems to be too far back between the front wheels. Also, just down the Holyhead Road in Coventry was a possible third contender to add to the conundrum. Could this be an Alvis 12/70? I heard back from the lfoc and yes there is some doubt that it is an L-F, particularly in relation to the headlight mounting. It would seem Alvis 12/70 would be more likely. -- Last edit: 2014-05-04 10:17:01 |
