I don't know, but it's probably much much rarer than leather (which does have its downsides - it gets hot, your skin sticks to it, and it cracks) Sunroofs aren't necessary most of the time but sometimes it's nice to have them (when parked you can lie back and look at the sky instead of the ceiling) -- Last edit: 2014-05-11 19:22:14 |

The Eight was the poverty model, there are two ways of looking at this, 1) why have the poverty model of a car like a Bentley? 2) If you go poverty there are fewer expensive gew-gaws to go wrong. (For definition of gew-gaws please watch "The Lavender Hill Mob.) This car is now approaching 30 years old, and even the poverty models are very complex. I know from experience of 30 years of Bentley ownership that genuine Bentley parts are extremely expensive, and that there are very few choices of supplier. The car may look cheap, but to fix anything, and to keep it serviced in the correct manner is also very expensive. This model was also the point at which electronics started to be used for engine management and even Bentleys bought from the cheapest tenderer. There is currently some discussion within the Bentley Drivers Club about the viability and durability of the electronics fitted to the cars, even more so on the models that came after the series in the picture. Sunroofs aren't useless shit. You can leave it a few inches open when it's parked in the boiling sun, when you can't leave the windows open. Plus a better breeze when driving, no side draft. |

They are ![]() a) very problematical, if not 100% perfectly sealed. A sunroof-car rusts and decomposes at many more parts, as a normal car. And when this happens, it's often not repairable/restorable. b) a broken sunroof -usually it gets broken on a weekend far away from home at pouring rain- is ugly to repair. Often you have to remove a plenty of other parts -which often get broken by that- and have to handle in small slots, where you cut and scratch your fingers. Plus the fact, that original sunroof-manufacturer-spec spare parts often are unavailable c) a sunroof let increase the fuel consumption. A lot, when it's open while driving, a little bit, when it's closed - due the higher weight. Every kilogramme weights costs a little bit more fuel. And a higher weight pushes down the max.speed capacity. d) it's uncomfortable to sit in a sunroof-car, because the roof is much lower. The sunroof-cartridge is mounted inside. If I noticed right, nowadays are sunroofs less diffused. Car makers seem to prefer to develop panoramic roofs than sunroofs. |

The S-Type Jaguar I took to Macedonia in 2000 had both clear and steel sunroofs, and both opened. I wasn't paying for the fuel so I quite liked it. |

@ingo I'm exactly the same height and have some space left. I don't have a & b on my car which is 16 year old. Those are quality issues, possibly VW-related. "Every kilogramme weights costs a little bit more fuel." That also goes for the person inside. Midgets must drive cheaply. Fuel consumption is already 10+ liters so it doesn't matter anymore... |

@chicomarx: it depends on the car. I was often badly surprised by cars with generally spacy interior, as small SUVs or different Passat-generations. The quality of sunroofs has nothing to do with the quality of the car, because no car-company produces own ones. In Europe in fact "Rockwell Golde" holds a monopolistic positions about them. |
