This is an AMX that is based on a Concord. Other than some graphics and wheels, it was just a Concord. The next year 1979 was the upgraded Spirit. A better style and the closest to an AMX of the past. With a short wheelbase and body, along with it being lightweight and rigid, it was a winner. There was also a HD Handling Package included on the AMX and optional on the Spirit GT. The 1979 model was the last year for the AMC V-8 (304-AMX or Spirit GT) so 1980-81 saw only the 258 inline six. Although low in HP (great torque), these gems will handle very well. With the lightweight body, even a 258 can be modified into a fast ride. Many AMC Spirits have been used for racing, as the SB Chevy will bolt in with ease. If you find a good 1979-1981 AMX they are appreciating in value and are quite rare to find. If you want to modify something, there are still plenty of regular Spirits available. Also look for the Spirit GT that has the Handling Package Option. It looks like a plain Spirit with a small "GT" tag on the fenders. Look under the rear for an antiroll bar. If there's one, then you have the Handling package. The Handling Package is much more than just a rear antiroll bar. I know of several guys that I've met over the years who've had their 1979 AMX since new. They all had the same story, took out new cars for a test drive in 1979 (T/A, Z-28, Mustang GT, etc). After driving the AMX, they bought it. Rebuild the suspension and drop in whatever engine/tranny combo and ENJOY. |
