Used by the Western Australia Police Gold Stealing Detection Unit. The Gold Stealing Detection Unit or the Gold Stealing Detectives Squad is specialized division of the WA Police based at the WA Police Kalgoorlie Branch that is tasked with investigating crimes ranging from theft of gold to the theft of equipment from the gold mines. The squad was formed in 1907 and is the smallest division as it is only made up of six detectives as well as the oldest division in the Western Australia Police Service. They also provide security services for the gold mines as well as providing advice and education to the mine's security staff, providing clearance certificates to new mine workers and conducting inspections to mines. Only two detectives from the Gold Stealing Detection Unit have only been killed in the line of duty, these were Inspector John Walsh and Sergeant Alexander Pittman who were both shot after surprising gold thieves at a hidden gold treatment plant, about 25km south-east of Boulder, Western Australia on the afternoon of the 28th April 1926. After killing Inspector Walsh and Sergeant Pittman, the killers dumped the detectives' bikes in bushland near the plant and took their bodies to the Cornwall Hotel at Boulder where their bodies were dismembered and burnt in a furnace. The killers later took their remains to the Belle of Kalgoorlie mine shaft at Miller's Find in Binduli, about 9km south-west of Kalgoorlie and dumped them down the shaft. Their remains were later found on the 12th May 1926 after two men noticed an swarm of flies and a smell coming from the shaft. The police later identified the killers as the Cornwall's barman, Phillip Treffene and a local bookkeeper, William Coulter who were arrested on the 6th June 1926. Police also arrested the Cornwall's owner, Evan Clarke who testified against Treffene and Coulter and stated he only cut up and burnt the detectives' bodies and only received a pardon for his part in the murders. Both Treffene and Coulter were convicted of the murders in August 1926 and later hung at Fremantle Gaol in mid October 1926. -- Last edit: 2022-07-29 15:24:57 |
