I still find it strangly amusing that even the Moscow Police drive(or at least once drove?) Ford Crown Victorias!! :) (Wonder if they liked them??)

I saw on TV - I can't remember on what show - a game they had on Russian TV some years ago. The contestant was put in a Daewoo Nexia, I think it was, and after having been given a short start he was pursued by real Moscow cops in a Crown Vicky. If they hadn't caught him within a certain time he got to keep the Nexia ... but I don't know whether anyone actually won it!

I think the Moscow police Crown Victorias were actually second-hand.

I read somewhere that they were old NYPD cars donated by the US government.

I too read that the cars were donated by the US government, but I couldn't say what agency they belonged to. I've also seen some from the 1995-1997 generation.

In Long Way Round, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman went through former Soviet countries like Kazakhstan (where Borat is from) and the police there were still driving Ladas. What do the Moscow police use now?

They still use Ladas though! And I bet the new ones are crap as well.

From the wikipedia on Ladas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lada :

"The logo represents crap the stylized crappy viking boat called crapia (crap). Lada is the name of a slavic crap (laideur of dégeulasserie, marde and crap)."

Good to know wikipedia is still a reliable source of knowledge!

These were quickly removed, it seems :p

From Wikipedia discussion page:

Q: What's the difference between a Lada and a Jehovah's Witness? A: You can close the door on a Jehovah's Witness.

There's been tons of Lada jokes about their poor quality.

What's the difference between a Lada and a Mars bar? 10 pence.

Some more Lada jokes (from a quick Google search):

What to you call a Lada with brakes?
Customised.

What's the difference between a Lada and a golf ball?
You can drive a golf ball 200 metres. (should be 200 yards, surely?)

What do you call a Lada going up a hill?
A bloody miracle.

There is a new 16 valve Lada.
It has 8 in the engine, and 8 in the radio.

A man goes into a car accessory shop and say's to the assistant "Can I have a hub cap for my Lada?"
The assistant thinks for a moment and reply's "Okay, it seems a fair swop"

Do you know what all the Lada owners are dreaming about?
Getting a ticket for speeding.

There were more jokes on this page but at the bottom someone had written: Note: These jokes are not meant for Lada Samaras. :??:
