Apparently the vehicles in this movie suffered from overheating (Due to the excessive heat because Earth’s orbit changed bringing it closer to the Sun) So I guess whatever those modifications are, they are to keep the Ford Explorer from overheating. I can’t say for sure, because I haven’t seen the movie for myself, I’m just going by the movie’s story line.
