1938 Riley Adelphi, with CB 1938 plate (but not listed on plate sites) - http://www.alantaylor.me.uk/images/cmm18.jpg . This description without photo "Riley Adelphi 19 - The Adelphi has a four cylinder engine (the model range is called Big Four). Certainly this is a big car with a huge seven cross member chassis, but the 2443cc engine tugged this saloon to an impressive top speed of 90mph. The gearbox had a dual overdrive and that meant that it had five gear ratios in all and could cruise at high speed with ease. The Adelphi is underrated, it was one of the best saloon's of the '30s but never gets the recognition. Its hydraulic dampers on the suspension and the 25-inch Girling brakes helped it to handle and stop very effectively." - http://www.cotswoldmotoringmuseum.co.uk/collections/cars plus a general summary "Riley 2½ Adelphi. (1937-39) - The Adelphi proved to be the most popular body on the Big 4 chassis, accounting for over half of production. The body was essentially that already in use on the 15/6 and indeed 8/90 chassis. It was an elegant and spacious 6-light 5 seater saloon, capable of over 80mph with the 2½L engine. It also formed the basis of Nuffield's 16hp 'Saloon'." from http://rileyrob.co.uk/specs/big4/adelphi5.htm suggest it's a new model for us as "1938 Riley Big Four Adelphi" - comments?? |

It's most definitely a 1938 model Riley, but we can't really be sure as to what body it wears. On first sight, it seems to be a Big Four model; leaving the options of the car being a Kestrel, a Continental or an Adelphi. ![]() ![]() ![]() Photos are in order of the stated models. Lexxie. |

@LoonyLady - welcome to our happy band of truthseekers. Please feel free to jump in with more of your Riley identifications. Have entered this as 16/4 Adelphi Big Four to put it with another 16/4 in our collection and the other Adelphi references online for this car. |

CB1938 is a Big 4 Adelphi still wearing its South African numberplate. |
