Was that pre-Excel? |

Yes, I believe so |

Ah, thanks Hecubus. Don't think I've ever seen one before. |

I don't think the Pony was sold in the US, so that might be why. It's almost impossible to see a Pony nowadays, but you used to be able to see one more often in the past (once I was old enough to think twice about it, I was mildly amused by the "Automatic" badge so many of them sported). |

I think I remember someone telling me that this car was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Wow...must have been a first assignment -- Last edit: 2007-02-17 02:21:33 |

I think it was the last car to still have ignition points in the eighties! My grand father traded a '77 Continental Mark V in mint condition (which he mostly left in the garage since new) and his 1981 Chevette for a new 1985 Pony with a 4 speed manual trans (no automatic badge on this one!). He liked his cheap Pony so much that he only bought Hyundai products after that until he died in 1994! He then had a 1987 Stellar and a 1992 Sonata. He used to like nicer cars but he hated to pay for anything and it got worse with age! |

Stellar? That's another Hyundai model never sold in the US. A friend had an Excel. It reminded me of a disposible camera. She just used it until it ran out of oil and threw it away. |

The Stellar was the predecessor of the Sonata. Unlike the Sonata, it was a RWD car. Just as good as the Pony and Excel were... I can't believe that the company that made this crap is still selling cars today (and unfortunately, a lot of them here). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Stellar As a Buick fan, I was not too happy when Buick replaced the "Limited" trim level by CXL. The Rendez-Vous CXL, the LaCrosse CXL and the Lucerne CXL remind me my grand father's 1987 Stellar CXL! -- Last edit: 2007-02-17 09:33:12 |

They were just as durable as a disposable camera! 8 years ago, I have driven my cousin's 1991 Excel to the junkyard. The car had about 85,000 miles (142,000KM) and the only accessory it had (a rear defroster) didn't work. The automatic transmission had to be replaced at 60,000 miles and the Mitsubishi engine was smoking and was barely able to move the car to the junkyard... |

1983 to 1985 Pony(sometimes known as Pony II,unofficially);it replaces the older,pristine boxy-shaped 1977 Pony(like all Hyundai of Seventies'-Eighties'-Nineties'was styled by Giugiaro) |
