That's perfectly understandable. I was in Dresden ca. 20 years ago, that should do for the next couple of years although it is a picturesque city nevertheless. Still, if I had the time in May, I'd go there just out of curiousity as I really would like to know how big the German/European Rootes-community really is. Besides, your link says they're planning a 190km-tour right through the "Erzgebirge"/Ore Mountains. That would be awesome to watch, too. Just think of all the cars that will break down there. |

The German Rootes-crap-community is wee. I've talked with them on the last Techno Classica. Actually they are for 90% Sunbeam Alpine/Tiger-owners. Other dsl-crap does nearly not exist, two, three Imps -NL- or B-imports-, not much more. Some years ago there was an article in the "Oldtimer Markt" or the "Oldtimer Praxis" about the only existing Hillman Hunter, sold originally in Germany. Later on I've seen this car for sale at a Veterama in Mannheim, for an affordable price, 1.300€ or so - but I was to fainthearted to purchase it ![]() |

The prices for used cars were more absurd, sometimes even higher than for new cars. So an used Wartburg costs more than 20.000 DDR-Mark and an used VW T3 Transporter (only those were sold in the DDR, not the posh Bus, Caravelle etc.) minimum 100.000 DDR-Mark. The official rate to the D-Mark was 1:1 (Western visitors had mandatory to change 25 Mark every day 1:1 and "private" changing was strictly forbidden), but the "black market"-rates were minimum 1:3 to 1:7. The best rates you could get in West German bank-offices. Once I got there DDR-Mark for the rate 1:11 ![]() But these deals were quite useless due the grotesque prices in the DDR. Regular stuff was extremely subsidized, but premium products ("premium" for DDR-proportions) extremly overpriced - and contemporaneously flogged in West Germany. We Western visitors had enough problems to get rid off the daily 25 Mark - no kidding, some of us ate 3 times the main course in HO-restaurants.
