I guess they didn't want to resort to that Hollywood cliche? :p

There is a thing such as mass production; they made more than one Peterbilt 378.

maybe they filmed the hitchhicking before the crash scene, then gave everything to the film editing crew

I've been looking to see if I can find this make/model for sale. I cant find the exact type; either the fuel tank is further back and/or no air filters on the side. Any ideas of where to get the same model/year truck??

It’s Hollywood to always have tankers blow up, in real life they don’t always go boom when they crash

I think they did this to establish that that company’s tanker trucks frequently drive down that road. It’s not necessarily suppose to be the “same truck” that involved in the deadly wreck

This Movie was Filmed September-November 1988. The truck was custom ordered in July, meaning it's a 1988 Peterbilt 378.

Customer ordered in July is either a really late 1988 or a brand new 1989. Wish we could see the VIN if it was available...

4 Stars. It kills 3 main characters: Gage, Victor Pascow, and Church. It is used very often during the film, and is crucial to several plot points and the climax. The driver is seen a couple of times aswell.

And I think this is the VIN number, I'm not 100% sure, but everything seems to match up. I had to use 2 VIN checkers.

VIN: 1ZTSX89XTJO276690

It can't be a 4 stars, it's wasn't "use" by main character or a long time. It's use in a few scene each time.

And for those who wondering about the truck plate: Link to "www.youtube.com"

Bray7 US

2022-09-27 04:20

It was used for a long time, but not by a main character. Only by a minor truck driver(s) in like four scenes. I figured the truck itself was what was iconic, like a symbol. So four stars is still out of the question I assume?

opal TH

2022-09-27 08:37

Well yes. You see, the movie is about the cat & baby come back to life. The truck itself has nothing to do with it, it just a custom design for movie as minor used (which should be 2 stars role but we kick up to 3 stars as a small iconic role).

So was this a 1989 MY then? Where did you happen to locate the VIN for the truck?

Bray7 US

2022-09-27 20:04

Opal linked a video to Mobile Instinct's channel, and in that video the license plate can be seen. If you go to the Maine.gov website you can actually use a license plate searcher. The plate reads 637-372, and it registers to a 1989 Peterbilt. I actually visited a Pet Sematary fan page, and a user on there visited the truck in Princeton, Maine.

He mentioned in the post that the VIN Number was apparently 1ZTSX89XTJO276690. I looked it up on TruckersReport.com using a truck VIN checker somebody made. The only info I got was that the truck was Red, the year was 1989, and the truck had a custom label for the model (378) ending in X. Hence the 378X model name. To be completely honest, I actually formatted all my info based on that 1988 Peterbilt 375 Page, from Very Bad Things. I thought that was the proper way to format this information, and I more than less just replaced all the information with the stuff I gathered if that makes sense. Very huge mistake on my part, not a very trustworthy method when gathering info. I really shouldn't have done that. Sorry you guys.

Something is wrong with the VIN because we should be able to check it on NHTSA. However, errors galore so there must be something wrong here.

Bray7 US

2022-09-27 20:38

Not sure either. I'll try and do more research, but until I find something, I think this page should remain as is.

The truck is indeed a 1989 Peterbilt 378X like Bray7 has previously that was also found in Maine also in 2019 with a gold plaque on the dash to proof that is indeed the actual truck that was used during filming

Ironically it was found about a half hour from where the Pork Chop Express from Big Trouble In Little China was found

Both trucks were featured in the local news paper when they both were first found

Okay so here's a bit of an update on this truck on it's current status:

This truck was apparently sold and moved about two years ago. Somebody named Mike Tammaro posted a comment on Mobile Instinct's video telling the story of the truck. The comment has really poor grammar. And I even looked up some of the individuals he specifically mentioned, and only one of them checked out. Mike DiCenzo, a person lives in Baileyville just outside of Princeton is apparently the buyer. So if he's telling the truth, it means that this truck is receiving the proper restoration it deserves. And even though Mike has not posted any updates since, the truck is no longer visible on google maps which indicates it's removal. So I guess we'll have to wait awhile again.

[Image: pettruckmapview.jpg] [Image: pettruckinperson1.jpg] [Image: pettruckinperson2.jpg]

So no, this truck is not a 1989, it is indeed a 1988 Peterbilt 378 as I originally thought. But the "X" suffix is still unclear. Some custom ordered models from the first few years had this on their model names. The incorrect VIN comes from another custom truck that was sent to a Midwestern dealership. (I think? Still not sure why it doesn't work. No other information is available) The X suffix was only given to models like the 367, 377, and of course, the 378. Not jus the 379 as most believe.

Another interesting tidbit here: There was a post by a user on TruckerReport in 2021 about an alleged second truck being used during the film. The truck is identical to the real one, the only difference being that it's rear toolboxes were missing. The custom air cleaners and other aspects seemed to be a perfect match. But alas, this turned out to be false. It was a custom ordered Peterbilt, but it was located in Kentucky, and it was actually a 1992. (Features such as the clearance lights, do not appear in the film.) As I found out for myself on the auction site it was listed on.

-> 1988 Peterbilt 378

Edit: The letter X after the model name actually means that the truck was built with components from other models. (Options that aren't available even with a custom order.) It's not officially listed on VIN numbers, plate Lookups, or even model brochures. It's just a code that Peterbilt uses when building a truck, and it's communicated to a dealership if a truck of this sort is ever custom built. So it technically shouldn't be listed following this sites rules. It's listed correctly then.

Hopefully we can get more info on this truck in the future. And maybe one day we'll get the real VIN, and to see it back in it's glory.

MY Confirmed to be 1988 as well I believe.

Mike Tammaro and his company did a fantastic job restoring this truck, and they're planning on taking it to horror conventions and parades in the future.
