I think the 4 door was developed by the German Ford and built in both Dagenham and Köln. |

I've read 4 door was developed by Ford UK, but only because Ford Germany pressured them into designing it. The Ford/Escort books I've read - all written by Brits - give a clear message that Ford D were uninterested in anything to do with the Escort Mk1, so left the project to Ford UK who did all the work. When Ford D realised it was actually a good seller in Europe, they woke up slightly to insist a 4 door was made and started production in D for the first time after early LHD cars for Europe had been farmed out to Genk. But otherwise they stayed out of it because they wanted to secure full control over the Taunus TC1/Cortina Mk3 project without letting Ford UK in. But Ford UK insisted that they needed to develop the Cortina side of the project so there was a big argument until Dearbon told Köln to let Dagenham do the Cortina. Dagenham then decided that they had to make the Cortina very different from the Taunus as a ![]() ![]() |
