The one on the left is from 1950. In 1951, the reversing lights were incorporated below the tail-light unit. In 1952 the exhaust came through oval ports in the rear bumper. |

But it's a Series 62 too, isn't it? |

In the Encyclopedia of American cars 1946-1959 of James H.Moloney and Geo H.Damman ( Crestline Publishing Co. 1980 ) it is stated under Cadillac model year 1952 on page 29 that :" the backup lamps , now being standard equipment, no longer were separate units placed beneath the trunk but were housed with the taillight directional lamps".So I conclude- at least from this source- that 1951 model year Cadillacs still had separate backup lamps.Do you know of different sources concerning this or is the encyclopedia wrong ? Or was the modification introduced somewhere during 1951 ? I agree it is not a '52 model year , those had exhaust ports in the bumpers. |

Pilou, The Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975 3rd edition :edited by John Gunnell (Krause Publications 1992), has the same information for 1952 backup lamps that you have. It states: "back up lights were standard equipment and were now incorporated in the taillights". However, the pictures of 1951 in my reference seem to show the same kind of tail light assembly as the 1952? Perhaps, the difference was "standard equipment". Prior to 1952 the back up lights were apparently not standard equipment but they may have been available as "optional equipment" at extra cost. ![]() -- Last edit: 2007-03-05 18:52:26 |

"The Encyclopedia of American Cars, 1946-1959" by James H. Moloney is full of mistakes in the Cadillac section; I assume, therefore, that there are also many mistakes as regards other makes as well. The back-up lights were incorporated in the Cadillac tail-fins (as standard equipment) in 1951. Souce: Cadillac dealers' "Data Book." In the small images, the close-up view shows the rear end of a '53 Cadillac (in the foreground) and a 1950 Cadillac (in the background). |
