Is this the roof for sightseeing & watching the skyscraper? |

I don't know what that panel on the roof is for |

I found this on the web. I have no idea of its accuracy: "In mid-year 1939, the highly advanced A series was introduced. A review written that year noted, "...the most radical innovation of the entire taxicab industry this year. Checker's disappearing top is attracting widespread attention in the larger cities where its Parmelee system fleets operate.... The all-metal landaulet can be opened or closed by the driver in 40 seconds, without moving from his seat...the cab is equipped with a glass roof that can be readily opened or closed by the driver at the will of his fare." Other innovations included an automatic signal to warn pedestrians when the car was backing up, finger guards on the doors and Latex seat cushions for comfort and easy cleaning." http://www.hemmings.com/hcc/stories/2005/08/01/hmn_feature5.html edit: Jun, I think you are right it was probably just for sightseeing. I would love to see one with the top open. -- Last edit: 2007-03-09 19:16:52 |

I learned something too. I had no idea that such a car was made - great to learn stuff like that. |

Above the driver is another vent that could be opened to allow the driver to get fresh air. First introduced on the Checker Model Y in 1935, cabs no longer had convertable tops over the driver so the vent allowed the driver some freedom from hot weather In terms of sight seeing. The Checker rear fold down roof also allowed for cooler rides in hot weather. Air conditioning was not available to pre war Checkers. All Model A's had the fold down roofs, it truely was a great time to get a taxi ride in NYC if you hailed a Checker. Post WWII this feature was no longer available on Checkers DeSoto Skyways had sunroofs, but never had fold down roofs |
