This is a " /8 " (in German "Strich 8", or "bar 8"). The official internal model codes for this Mercedes were W114 and W115. The identifier /8 ("strich 8") relates to the year in which this model came out: 1968. All 4-cylinder models (gasoline or diesel) are W115, the ones with 6-cylinder are W114. For Mercedes-Benz this was the first Mercedes to come a bit more within reach of the common man in the street. This explains the high sales volume: nearly 2 million, as many as all post-war Mercedes up to then (1945-1968) put together! This model was offered from 1968 to 1975. In 1976 it was replaced by the W123. |
