Each episode has a fixed year, which should determine the cut-off point for visible vehicles (but there are some errors and approximations): Ep1 - 1964 Ep2 - 1966 Ep3 - 1967 Ep4 - 1970 Ep5 - 1974 Ep6 - 1979 Ep7 - 1984 Ep8 - 1987 Ep9 - 1995. Many of those years match UK election dates, which is one of the themes through the series. Well worth watching - so many excellent characters and storylines. Very anti-Thatcher, but also a useful reminder of how ineffective Labour was in the 70s/80s/early 90s. Also a bleak view of corruption (Newcastle housing, London Met police, parliamentary lobbying) among several other themes. As a postscript, one game to play through the series is to watch how some characters progress through life between the episodes according to the cars they use. For example Tosker's is a steady rise: Ep4 J4 van Ep6 Granada Ghia Mk1 Ep8 Merc 500 SEL Ep9 Bentley something flash However Nicky's sequence starts with the best and then fluctuates up and down as the years pass: Ep2 a mighty Hillman Minx Ep4 VW Beetle Ep7 Toyota Tercel (his low point, but rises again to) Ep8 Saab 900i (and then drops a bit to) Ep9 Mondeo GLX ... and Roy the big chief policeman rises and falls Ep2 early Rover 105 Ep2 late VdP 3-Litre (but plummets to) Ep4 Maxi .. and by ep6 he's reduced to sitting on an allotment, wearing a flat cap and growing leeks. |
