By Claude Bernard-Aubert. Interesting movie, in concept, about interracial relationships in Paris during the early '60s. Admittedly, the execution could have been better at times but overall I thought the plot was decent and the cinematography is pretty good as well. I don't understand the critical reviews on IMDb; remember this movie was released 6 years before a film like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), although the subject matter was already more subtly touched upon in earlier French films such as the excellent short Afrique sur Seine (1955). This movie is distributed by a company called Something Weird Video, who are known for their, well ... rather weird movies. However, apart from the English title, which feels inappropriate and is not a literal translation of the original French title, and possibly the opening scene, there is actually nothing weird about this movie and its subject matter if you are familiar with French cinema from the era. I guess the expectations from some viewers might have been different than mine, and it should be noted that the dubbed version sounds awful which might have put some off. For rjluna2 |
