4-part Channel 4 drama about a feminist book publishing co-operative from the 1970s to late 90s. Which does not sound a good start. But underneath lavish dollops of feminist slogans and pompous socio-political speeches, there lurks a very well-crafted story with interesting characters and some perceptive comments about Britain during 30 years of change. Ep1 (1971-73) is a spiky mess, ep2 (1977) settles down, ep3 (1983) is superb and ep4 (1996) manages to wrap everything up in an excellent finale. Available on 4oD at http://www.channel4.com/programmes/big-women . 1990s stuff on Channel 4 was often eccentric, unpredictable, and often dated quickly - this is no exception, but it does deliver if you stick with it. |
