It was before "my" time, but the winters 1962/63 and 1963/64 were known as some of the coldest in Europe ever. So this incident was possible only at those times: http://www.taunuskaefer.de/_verschollen.htm (a story well-known in the VW-scene) Annother incident was, that these two cold winters have caused the collapse of DKW. The two-stroke-engines -especially of the new released F102- couldn't stand the extreme low temperatures and have bursted for hundreds. Due that the back then still existing lobby of two-stroke-fans in West Germany collapsed, too. So DKWs, even the brand new F102 have lost their value and reputation just within weeks. Everyone wanted to get rid of them. This was that comprehensive, that the developing and releasing of the new Audi was a real knee-jerk action, beause DKW was close before the complete breakdown. |
