directed by Roy Del Ruth is the first version of Dashiell Hammett's novel. Ricardo Cortez (ex-latin lover, born Jacob Krantz) is Sam Spade with an annoying permanent grim, but I found Bebe Daniels (Ruth Wonderly) far more sexy than Mary Astor. The other women (Una Merkel, Thelma Todd) too are quite sexy and sexual. For the trio of ruthless chasers of the black bird, Dudley Digges (Casper Gutman), Otto Matieson (Joel Cairo) and Dwight Frye (Wilmer Cook)—this one with far too few lines (one, actually, a pity)— are different of Greenstreet, Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr but they are very good, indeed. Well, it's the same story (a bit shortened in the run, with a slightly different ending), well paced and well acted (not that much 'silent turned to talkie' acting here, in my opinion). I read in IMDb reviews that the movie is soaked with oh-lala sexual innuendos very 'pre-code' but 'in-code' Huston's Falcon was too, and these lines are rather mundane… Nothing special here to me, except Bebe Daniels in the bath-tub (we see her naked shoulders). If you like the story but are affraid of Bogart's sub-machine-gun-ish elocution, Del Ruth's Maltese Falcon is a good substitute. As for Huston's, this one is not a car-movie. Actually, I fear that the four vehicles I captured will stay un-identified. -- Last edit: 2015-04-17 11:08:02 |

… And I'll put more Dashiell Hammett's based or written stuff on IMCDb pretty soon. |
