Very famous wartime film, extensively quoted/recycled in many later documentaries. Exists in 2 versions![]() London Can Take It! - 9 minutes, produced for American audiences with a not particularly subtle message that Blighty is coping fine, but we need your assistance pretty quickly - please don't wait until Pearl Harbour in 2 years time before you join in. ![]() ![]() Britain Can Take It! - slightly chopped 8 minute version for UK audiences with revised voiceover. No new footage. All entries are shown in both versions, but all timings here only apply for London Can Take It! Both films included on ![]() If War Should Come - vol 3 (1939-41) of 3 BFI compilation DVD sets of shorts from The GPO Film Unit. (Britain Can Take It! is a DVD extra on disc 2). At one point, the voiceover introduces the phrase of Britain being "Churchill's island" which later became another famous propaganda film, but not included on this DVD set. Street scenes ![]() ![]() - anything interesting?? Big sleek saloon with boot-mounted spare wheel in right of 2nd thumb nearly got a page - and could still get one if wanted .... Bomb damage ![]() ![]() Train services continuing over damaged bridge repaired by inserting wonky column of bricks ![]() King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mum) visiting bombed sites ![]() - apparently the fact that they chose to stay living in London instead of evacuating to countryside and made lots of visits like this was a huge morale booster to ordinary Londoners to keep calm and carry on Planes for impdb ![]() ![]() |
