![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2003 TV mini-series about the Halifax explosion of 1917 caused by the SS Mont-Blanc, loaded with high explosives, colliding with the Norwegian SS Imo, setting the Mont-Blanc on fire, causing the crew to evacuate the vessel and leaving it to run aground on the harbour where it exploded in the biggest pre-atomic explosion on record. The explosion leveled the city of Halifax and killed 1'782 people. Set from December 3rd, 1917 to presumably April 1918, as Captain Wyatt's trial is depicted. This miniseries aired in two parts, cost $10.4 million to make, drew in 1.5 million viewers owing to CBC's heavy promotion. It was poorly received by critics and descendants of those who perished in the explosion, with particular issue being taken with the vast historical distortions and inaccuracies, such as Commander Wyatt being a British officer pushing for relaxed regulations regarding ammunition handling when he was actually a Canadian officer strongly opposed to the relaxed regulations, and Capt. Le Medec's depiction of a coward who was the first to jump ship when he was actually the last to leave. As this miniseries is set in 1917, I don't expect the vast majority of cars depicted and used to be models available at the time. Airdate: October 26th, 2003. -- Last edit: 2023-10-04 17:04:11 |
