… is no Casablanca though having Igrid Bergman in common.

The story takes place between 1938 and 1939, eve of the WWII (for German, Polish, French and British people). But the main subject is loneliness, hard-times, for refugees nd exilees. It's not a "Résistance" story at all, more about resilience and vengeance. Based on a Erich-Maria Remarque's, it gives also a study of a woman, rather original in tone.

are very good. Charles Laughton's (with short screen time) and Louis Calhern's characters, maybe more simplistic, are strong enough to make this long movie (133 minutes) a very valuable drama, enhanced by a very fine cinematography ((signed by Russel Metty).

Un bon film, récemment restauré, peu connu sous nos latitudes, qui mérite d'être découvert. Ce n'est pas un de ces films de résistance à la Hollywood, au sens où on ne trouve rien de triomphal ici, et où la violence du héros (qui le conduit à ourdir et mener à bien sa vengeance) est fort peu déguisée. Si tout n'est pas subtil — ainsi le gestapiste Charles Laughton — j'ai trouvé le film l'être suffisamment pour me satisfaire, spécialement dans le portrait de jeune femme qui veut ne rien savoir de la guerre qui menace que donne Ingrid Bergman.

It's obvioulsy and mainly filmed in Hollywood studio lots.
I read there were additional filming in New York City (?) and in France, supposedly made by Georges Lampin. It perplexes me, since what we see of inquestionnably French could be regular stock shots: Arch of Triumph and Champs-Elysées by night, five seconds,

Besides, lot of filmage has been made which was not incuded in the final montage, it seems, which could explain all those contradictory and puzzling mentions on IMDb.

… is not a relevant question. Let's say that the reconstruction of a Parisian environment on US studio lot is rather good. But to make the traffic looks French, you see (as I did, thanks to John) that British cars were used.
