Taken from If War Should Come - vol 3 (1939-41) of 3 BFI compilation DVD sets of shorts from The GPO Film Unit. 19 minute film based on the government-commissioned report by Sir Charles Bressay on planning the road transport needs of London for the next 30 years, but GPO managed to insert a long irrelevant sequence about their new electric driverless underground railway. Very interesting film because many of the ideas survived into the very different scenario of post-WW2 reconstruction while others were completely abandoned. Can't find it on youtube - if it's there it's submerged under another 1939 town planning documentary also called "The City" from the US. Illuminated Packard sign - not clear where it was. |
