Relaunching my sporadic crusade to capture Children's Film Foundation/BFi Bumper Box sets, now I've got Volume 3 to play with. This is the opener, a typical jolly hockeysticks 50s adventure which starts when Jimmy, a young sea cadet walking home rescues a pilot from a burning plane crash. As a reward he gets a trip to Gibraltar, where with his new friend Pilar they prevent nasty men blowing up the British fleet and the harbour dock gates - hoorah! Strangely for these films, there was no compulsory CFF family doggie this time - boo hiss! A big production, with RAF, Navy and Army heavily involved - lots of planes used, some boats and extensive use of the docks in Gib in and around real ships of the fleet. Plus lots of location filming in Gib streets and alleys. Various stuff: - the Gibraltar apes - the first one is apparently the boss of the colony, sort of like Sir Admin with the rest of us - seems they're not really apes, but Barbary Macaques - "funicular" - apparently a source of puzzlement to folk who know Gibraltar where and what it was, but seems a service elevator for the Water Catchments which used to exist on the east side of the rock - a young George Cole (Minder, St Trinians etc) - Gib docks navy rescue launch |

One more time, thank you dsl ! Another rarity with an unseen airline (to date) at IMPDB https://www.impdb.org/index.php?title=The_Clue_of_the_Missing_Ape those films that treat children as children but attribute adult behaviour to them ... What a paradox, considering the fateful fate of one of the planes seen on screen! |
