It is curious that the American cars are from the same era as in the 1960 version of the film. The Turkish mobile park was little renovated in the 60's ... Any economic crisis? |

There was a coup d'état in 1960 that came at a time when funds from the US were depleted. Local car manufacture (Ford Otosan/Anadol, Askam etc.) also commenced during this time, meaning that taxes may have been enforced upon imported vehicles. The reason the 1950s-era American taxis were kept in service for so long was simply because there were so many of them available and they were more suited in their taxi-role than other cars of the time for their spaciousness, powerful engines and relative ease of maintenance. The 1973 oil crisis ultimately took the toll on the majority of those still in service, though quite a few later-1950s models remained in service until the end of the 1970s. |
