Popular type of Private Eye genre of the 50s and 60s, like 77 Sunset Strip. Usually done by Warner Brothers TV division. Van Williams would later play the lead in the Greem Hornet series. |

"Surfside 6" was one of the Warner Bros./ABC exotic-locale detective shows put out in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The first was "77 Sunset Strip" (1958-1964) and because it was so popular they then created "Hawaiian Eye" (1959-1963) set in Honolulu and "Bourbon Street Beat" (1959-1960), set in New Orleans. However, "Bourbon" didn't catch on and it only lasted 1 season and was then cancelled. Then came "Surfside 6", set in Miami Beach, and even though it was popular it only lasted 2 seasons (1960-1962). When one show was cancelled, Warner Bros. liked to re-use their leading male stars...so one detective from the failed "Bourbon Street Beat" joined "77 Sunset Strip." When "Surfside" was cancelled Troy Donahue joined "Hawaiian Eye." The shows were actually mostly filmed at the Warner Bros. Burbank studios in Hollywood (rather than their "supposed" exotic or tropical locations), so the characters and shows crossed over all the time. I recently obtained episodes of "Hawaiian Eye" and "Surfside 6!" Can't wait to watch them--from the "good-ol-days" of TV! |
