Un des plus célèbres films de Monsieur Hitchcock, ...ça manquait sur IMCDb je trouve :D (même si ce n' est pas mon préféré, c'est quand même très très bien! ;) )

ya know, us younger generations have been desensitized to violence but the scene where norman comes out of the bedroom, stabs that guy in the face and he falls backwards down the stairs. . . holy $#!T that scared the crap outta me.

SUPERB movie!!! This is a truly frightening movie...as much of the plot could actually happen! But, in my opinion one of the truly terrifying moments was during the famous "shower scene." The montage flips back and forth between the black silhouette of "Mother" and poor Janet Leigh getting stabbed while taking a shower. You never really saw much of Mother or what features she had....but during that stabbing scene if you look very closely at Mother you can see EYES leering out at you from the dark!! :wow: Now that was scary!!

Agreed.
My favorite Hitchcock movie and one of the top suspense movies for me (along with "Duel").

Hitchcock did so many superb movies that it's hard to pick my favorite...but "Psycho" is definitely towards the top of the list!! My two all-time favorite suspense/scary movies, however, are "Psycho" and John Carpenter's 1978 "Halloween". "Psycho" and "Halloween" actually have several tie-ins with each other too.

There were no definite cars that stuck out at me in "Psycho" (other than Mother's abandoned 1928 Ford Model A behind the hotel  ) but Carpenter's own 1973 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, at the time, was actually used in "Halloween"! Have always liked Caddy's of the 80's and older, but don't really care for the bubble-butt Caddy's of today.

Agree again.
Modern Cadillacs just don't seem like Cadillacs to me.

The last REALLY good one was the '92 Brougham although the DeVille series continued to hold up stylewise against its period competitors.

I never really thought of that Model A as being "Mother's" before.
Was that your idea or did you read it somewhere? It's not discussed at all during the movie.

No, I didn't read it anywhere. I just stated it to be funny. The old Ford looked so old and decrepit that it seemed like something she would drive--if she was still alive. ;) I'm sure "Mother" never drove before, though. It was most likely Mr. Bates' car at one time, before he died. Once he died Norma (Mother) probably just stuck it out back of the motel and let it rot.

A little surprising, though.
If Mrs. Bates and husband #2 had enough money to build that motel, why would they have an ancient car stashed behind it?

I have always wondered why Hitchcock had it placed there. He never did anything without a good reason.
(Always loved seeing it there. Gave the scene a melancholy feel.)

HunterMan US

2012-07-13 05:40

The "melancholy" feel is exactly why Hitchcock had the old Ford put there...and focused on for a few moments when Lila was slowly making her way up to the old mansion. ;) The abandoned Model A definitely assisted in giving the place a foreboding atmosphere!

As for why the car was there in the storyline, it could have been there before the motel was built, and they just built it in front of it? Maybe Norma refused to get rid of it because it was Mr. Bates' and she couldn't bare to get rid of it? Or, it could have been her 2nd Man's car...but I doubt! Norman would have never stood for it staying around after he and Mother were "gone". As for the "husband #2" (Chet I think?)...actually Norma Bates never married that guy, he was just her lover. They probably would have gotten married eventually if Norman hadn't poisoned them. ;) I don't think they were that rich...he had just enough money to help Norma build the motel but not much more. The motel was supposed to help them make a decent living.

I still think that the old Ford Model A was probably Norman's father's and once it broke down Mother just let it sit, and eventually the motel was built around/in front of it.

Interesting ideas, Hunter.
But I doubt the motel would have been built with the car there and so close. It likely would have interfered with construction activity.

HunterMan US

2012-07-15 20:05

True...so maybe the old Model A was still running when Norma and her lover Chet built the motel. It still originally could've been Norman's father's and was on the property. After the motel was built, it probably broke down at some point (as it was fairly old even by then) and they just stuck it in back. It could have broke down after Mother and Chet met their "untimely" end. ;) Then Norman just stuck it in back, thinking someday he'd have it fixed but never did. I think Hitchcock had it put there as a decrepit symbol of the "dark" and distrubing Bates family past.

I don't think the old Ford was ever Chet's...or Norman would have gotten rid of it as soon as Chet was dead. I also don't think it was ever a past guest's of the motel that Norman "took care of" either...or else Norman would have put it at the bottom of the swamp as he did all the other victim's cars. No...it had to have been a vehicle from the Bates' family past, again most likely Norman's father's. Did we ever learn Norman's father's name?? It's been a while since I've watched the "Psycho" series...I can't remember?

Works for me.

No, I don't ever recall the father's name being mentioned.
We'll just have to call him "Mr. Bates".

Commander 57,

I recently read that, I think it is A&E, is going to do a new TV series that will be sort of a prequel to "Psycho"...called "The Bates Motel". I know they attempted something like this back in 87 and it didn't work...but this is suppposedly going to be much better! It's already slated for 10 episodes for its first season. It'll air sometime this next year, 2013.

It may be really good...or really bad, but I'm looking forward to finding out. :) Wouldn't it be hilarious if they have the old Model A Ford used in the series...to show how it came to be at the motel. ;)

Commander 57 US

2012-07-16 14:43

That would be fantastic.
It would also be good if it was filmed in the same moody black and white format.

HunterMan US

2012-07-16 18:01

Yeah...don't know if they'll do it in black-and-white, but it would be effective if they'd film it in sort of an "off" or "yellowish/brownish" color to still give an ominous feel to it. I've seen other movies do that on purpose to give sort of a feeling that something is not quite right, or to create a foreboding feeling.

Don't know what year they'd start in...whether when Norman was little or a young teenager, but it will be interesting to see what vintage cars/vehicles they'll use. However, I don't know if the old Model A will make it into the story or not. ;)

Commander,

Don't know if you'll see this anytime soon as it was last summer when we were last discussing this...but I recently read that they're going to make the new "Bates Motel" series in present day. Don't know if I'll like that or not...and/or if they'll use the original "Psycho" set with house and motel?? :/ Anyway, if they do I wonder if they'll leave the old 28 Model A in back...as it actually is still there and part of the Universal tour (as I've given more info under the actual pic of the old Ford)?

I suppose they could do a "continuation" with it being Norman's baby son all grown up...going off "Psycho IV: The Beginning" which ended with Norman and his wife supposedly giving birth to a baby--as you hear the baby cry as the credits roll. That was 1990 so the baby would be almost 23 now...around the age that Norman was in this original 1960 movie. But, I bet they're going to do a re-do type of thing, and I'm not sure that will be a good idea.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know that the old 1928 Ford Model A is still on the set today and behind the motel for the Universal tour! Don't know if it's the actual same one, as it's more "together" (with an upper structure and hood intact) but it's the same kind of car as far as I can tell from the "Psycho Legacy" DVD set. :)

Can anyone tell me if there are any pedal pumping shots during that long drive Janet Leigh does? I'm thinking of making a Hitchcock compilation..but so far all I know about is The Birds.

Loosely based on the story of Ed Gein. Arguably the first slasher movie, inspiring the likes of Black Christmas, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and Friday the 13th.
