West Yorkshire = Bradford, Leeds, Halifax, Huddersfield etc and lots of towns that sound like they should be adverbs - Keighley, Otley, Bingley, Ilkley. Another fairly stodgy police recruitment film with lots of staged incidents; after wading through loads of these 50s-70s police films, this one feels like the end of an era in some ways. No sign here for instance of the local plod on his bike being everybody's friend and being greeted with a smile or wave by all the local folk wherever he goes. Also the first real appearances of non-white characters, both as general public and in police themselves. But the message still portrays the police as protectors of their community and places a lot of emphasis on how the public respect for the police means they do not need to carry weapons or guns to carry out their duties and how this was a uniquely British set of values compared to forces elsewhere in the world. Depressing today to realise how quickly that attitude disappeared into them-and-us stances on both sides. |
