carchasesfanatic wrote any chases?

Based around the street racing culture so plenty of street racing action but not chases as such

The actor who plays Rebel, the blind mechanic in "Running on Empty" /vehicle_81754-Holden-1-tonner.html is Max Cullen who played Thomas, the spray painter in "Midnite Spares" /vehicle_78622-Volkswagen-Typ-1.html

This looks like it could be one to pickup, if I can just find it on DVD in the U.S.

The '69 Charger is not a Charger. It has a huge spoiler on it, like the '70 Plymouth Superbird.

The actor that plays 'starter' (with crutches) also plays mechanic's assistance in Mad Max 2 (road warrior).

This black Chev that they used in Running on empty used to get around the Western Suburbs of Sydney a while after it was fimed. I seen it a few times, once up very close. It was a little rough up close and wasn't a real 2 door it had the back doors welded up and filled up with filler- it wasn't a great job and you could see it fairly clearly. Also it wasn't supercharged when I seen it, either it was removed or never was and they just added the effects. Also watch the V8 yellow Holden HT Monaro which is drag racing, suddenly turn into a HG (1 model yr later) 6cylinder. As it crashes and blows up you can see the straight 6 as the bonnet comes off. I don't mean to be negative I just found it interesting what they do in movies. Great movie if you love cars and street racing. Long live the classics!

The reason the crash cars are mock ups is that most of the cars used in the movie were volunteered for use by the owners who were actually involved in the illegal street race scene at the time. Obviously they wouldnt want their cars destroyed for the film so mock ups were made for the crash scenes.I grew up in the eastern suburbs of sydney at the time and my father was a big motorhead. We used to go and hang out at cooggee beach or bondi beach or under the bridge at hickson rd or at the docks at port botany and literally dozens of cars would show up and race each other just like in the movie. Cops didnt really care back then but now they have speed bumps and automated speed cameras every few metres to stop people racing. Many of the cars from the film still exist as they did back then. Complete with tacky 80's paintjobs and spoilers. I see them at car shows now and then.

You can tell that the film is set in New South Wales in 1982 as the vehicles has the 1982 New South Wales registration stickers on the windscreens.

In late October 2018 we are having a Running On Empty Festival in Cobar NSW (where much of the film was shot).

We have been in contact with Actors and Mechanics that were involved with the film.

If anyone knows of where ANY of the cars from the movie are now, please let me know.

There is a page on Facebook for the Festival
