Is the AA bike a Chater-Lea? In which case it would be our first. https://www.vintagebike.co.uk/pictures/chater-lea-aa-outfit/ -- Last edit: 2020-09-05 22:10:44 |

The only feature I think I can see on the AA bike is the headlamp. Looks older than your Chater-Lea example, probably cylindrical rather than tear-drop shaped and with a peaked-hood the complete assembly in either brass or chromed finish. Re-watched 'Strong Poison' completely again and no other or better views seen. The original region 1 DVD is low quality and the source material was probably originally of video tape quality. A pity really since the full BBC, WGBH Boston 'Dorothy L. Sayers Mystery' series was exceptional for the 1980s and although rather slow-paced stands up well even 30-plus years later. |

More likely a BSA M20, it and the M21 were the mainstay of the AA fleet. |

“Chater Lea....committed itself entirely to motorcycles in 1922. These included some highly respected performance models and sidecar outfits widely used for commercial deliveries and by the Automobile Association, which would eventually be one of Chater Lea’s last customers for motorcycles in 1936.” “The World Guide to Automobiles, the Makers and their Marques” Guild Publishing 1987, entry written by Brian Laban. The company ceased motor cycle production at the end of 1935, when the Blackburne company stopped making engines. Another source, which I don’t value as highly as this book says that Chater Lea supplied 1200 combinations, then mentions the AA, but I don’t think the two connect. The BSA M20 was built from 1937, so post dating the AA’s Chater Lea outfits. I shall continue digging, oil may be struck! -- Last edit: 2020-09-06 16:54:40 |
