280E or 300D (chrome under rear lights). -- Last edit: 2011-08-16 19:37:00 |

Oops, it's 280 E, only US-Spec 300D had chrome. |

Thirsty 280E as taxicab in France (the European eldorado for diesels)? Are you sure? :P Something wrong happens with this 300D samples. The list of optional equipment, special wishes and accessories for W123 was outstanding. You could cancelled the version badge on trunk lid even, like here. -- Last edit: 2011-08-18 18:28:13 |

What's on the left? Dacia Duster? |
◊ 2011-08-18 18:25 |
More likely Landcruiser J70. |

Well, he meant this car: http://www.difflock.com/buyersguide/pastmasters/daciaduster/index.shtml |
◊ 2011-08-18 22:13 |
And I've mixed the name up with a Skoda Yeti |

Skacia Yester or Dada Dusty? |
◊ 2011-08-18 23:06 |
Is kudos right about this being a 280E? |
◊ 2011-08-18 23:15 |
Probably not as it has body colour hubcaps instead of alloys (unless UK 280E had upgrades over other markets). |
◊ 2011-08-18 23:16 |
Agreed. This being a taxi (as mentioned by 130rapid before) rather not. AFAIK it's no big job replacing the rubber "stripe" underneath the rear lights with those made of chrome (e.g. from a junkyard). Besides, the W123 280E had (like most six-cylinder-powered Mercedes') a double exhaust which I cannot see here. Edit: I've finally found a nice double-exhaust picture: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3550/3493934761_e6112c1929_o.jpg -- Last edit: 2011-08-21 11:46:32 |

Is kudos/mudflap trustworthy? |
◊ 2011-08-18 23:24 |
Well then you could as well ask whether I or many other members are trustworthy. I guess he just has made a mistake. I make mistakes all the time as well, especially as far as US-cars up to the 1980s are concerned |
◊ 2011-08-18 23:28 |
@Dsl: AFAIK alloys on the W123 were always a costly extra. Even the 280/280E came with body-colored hubcaps as standard. You even had to pay extra money for the right door-mirror. Edit: As a proof, here's a nice 280E sporting the standard wheels: Link to "www.google.de" -- Last edit: 2011-08-18 23:33:44 |

^^^ Come on - play fair. These Merc W123 details are a pain, probably inconsistent and easily changed. I do not know them to any useful degree, but as a spectator on other people's specialities would nod OK at the suggestion that 280E and 300D were the only ones to have this chrome under the lights - echoes someone's comments a few days ago. None of us seem to have a definite answer so it's OK to venture a suggestion, which he then corrected himself to make it more precise. My suggestion for the car is whether the Sept 82 update - when all models got the rectangular headlights which had been upper trim only until then might have also meant them all getting these rear chrome strips. I've no means of checking this, just flying a kite, but it might resolve some of these examples which keep cropping up. -- Last edit: 2011-08-18 23:36:51 |

Here's a good clip from this with Françoise Sagan (Bonjour Tristesse) Link to "www.dailymotion.com" The whole program is posted on clivejames.com: http://www.clivejames.com/video/postcard-from-Paris but the video player doesn't load for me. |

3rd thumb has rectangular lights so the jury's still out ..... As for earlier shenanigans, maybe this will smooth things over: Jesus came across a crowd preparing to stone a woman to death. He stopped them and said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Immediately, a wrinkled old woman at the back of the crowd came forward and threw a boulder at the other woman. Jesus sighed and said "Mother! Sometimes you really piss me off!" |

The ad says "also can come with a set of original alloy wheels" ..... But your efforts are appreciated, and it is a nice example. |
◊ 2011-08-19 16:45 |
Of course the alloys the seller mentions are original. They just aren't standard. It's obvious he got the alloys afterwards as it would be much more difficult or at least time-consuming to get four colour-matching hubcaps from aftermarket sources. |

For clarification: there were only two Benzes, which had these BBS-alloys -nickname "Barockfelgen" = "baroque rims" as standard wheels: the 300 SEL 6.3 and the 450 SEL 6.9 - because the regular steel rims were too weak for the engine-power Sure, they were available a for a plenty of Benzes, starting in 1968 with the W114/115, also the facelifted versions of W108, W113, W111 Coupé and W111 Cabriolet (before 1968 they had different wheel-sizes, to identify by the round 1950ies hubcaps from W110 and so). All car-models up to 1986 (start of W124 and facelifts of W126, W107 and W201) are able to have the BBS-Barock-alloys. But always for extra charge, never included in the trim line. And poor Benz-owners had the possibility to buy aftersales market wannabe-Barock-looking plastic hubcaps... Some we have in our database. |
◊ 2011-08-19 19:56 |
The impertinent joke of that "extra option" was the fact, that the omission of these parts (badge plus the plastic shucks) had cost extra charge But absolutely typical for German car-brands. Mercedes and VW had been (still are!) the worst of them. |

You're right and photos confirm that. The speedometer has 160 km/h scale only so it's a diesel. |

While driving near Köln this afternoon, I've spotted an mint-looking original early 280 E. When I've told my wife about the details (chrome trims, headlamps, headrests, BBS-alloys) and have mentionied this specific discussion right here, she reacted a bit aggressively had have said nasty things about IMCDb and especially the users... |

Ingo - is there anything we can do to help in this crisis? Our thoughts and sympathies are very much with you. |
◊ 2011-08-20 23:31 |
Thanks, but it wasn't that bad. I've simulated some interest, when she said something about the cars, she maybe would choose, when her Astra G will be exhausted someday, so it was o.k. |

Compulsive hoarding is wrongfully demonised... With this instrument cluster it must be a 4-cyl. diesel version (160 km/h). 300 D had speedos with a 180 km/h scale. And just for the record: 300 D Turbo (in Europe only as wagon) and the small petrol versions: 200 km/h, 280 and 280 E: 220 km/h. |

The doorhandle, visible on the thumbnail, looks like Autobianchi/Lancia Y10. |
