It was my favourite choice for a main pic.

But "ELY766" is shot under many angles.

This is a Series 111 Wolseley Super Six either a 21HP or 25HP.They are both identical and the only way to tell is by the HP badge under the Wolseley badge on the grill and it's not clear enough on the pictures that DidierF has posted. I own a 21hp.

I'm confused by the various names for 25-whatever [Series III]. My book - jfs uses it as well - has Super Six as [Series II] only, with [Series III] as 25HP (plus similar 16HP and 21HP). But our existing entries - only 3 - are just 25 or 25/6 and all our Super Six are [Series II] only.

So to bring all the 25-whatever [Series III] together in a holding pen, I've labelled them 25/6 until further instructions.

DSL the s.w.b. cars both Series 11 and 111 were sold as Super Sixes and comprised of 16HP, 21HP and 25HP both series had a 25HP l.w.b. chassis on which limousine bodies were fitted.
There was also a Series 111 Super Six 25HP drophead coupe. A small number of other body styles were available on the Series 11 chassis including the Salon De-Ville, Special Coupe and the Sportsmans Saloon the only known survivor of the latter I owned in the '80s and which now resides in Ireland. Grouping them as you have is fine as they are shown on chassis plates as Type 16/6, 21/6 or 25/6 but were marketed as the model Super Six as per sales catalogues and instruction manuals. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'm easy with whatever the best description is, but based on your comment I think Super Six 25 might be better because it brings the [Series III] 25s into line with what we've already got quite happily on [Series II], and seems odd to have different names between the two Series unless there was an official title change.

So votes to change the batch of 25/6 to Super Six 25???

In addition if it helps Series 11 car's chassis nos. start for example in the case of the 25HP 225/501 and similarly Series 111's start with 325/501 with L designating l.w.b. versions eg. 225/L501.I realise that none of this will help identify these cars from pictures but it might go some way to help explain how the Nuffield organisation arrived at the various model designations. From 1948 on with the introduction of the 4/50 and 6/80 everything was much simpler.
Although they are quite different it is most apparent from the back where the Series 11 has the spare wheel mounted almost vertically with it's outline apparent on the rear body whereas all Series 111s have a flat bootlid with the spare housed in a separate compartment underneath.

Doesn't look like the 141" wheelbase of the 1938+ Series III Wolseley 25 saloon. If ELY here isn't an example of the 18/85 as used by our police forces, and much admired by fans of British films, I'll eat my copy of 'New Simpler French Course'. (At least it should be gluten free).

Start munching Pierre, ELY isn't an 18/85 but a Series 111 Super Six saloon with an 117" wheelbase, larger sidelights, different running boards and fog and passlamps mounted on pillars protruding through the front wings rather than behind the front bumper are the most obvious external differences. Also look at the profile of the lower edge of the rear wings. The LWB 25hp not the saloon has the 141" wheelbase.
