"The Great Glen Cattle Ranch was established in 1945 by Joseph W. Hobbs, an entrepreneur who made and lost several fortunes in Canada before returning to Britain after the great depression to prosper in the engineering and whisky trades. Hobbs bought Inverlochy Castle and estate in the mid-1940s and set about transforming tracts of barren moorland between Torlundy and Achnabobane into good prairie style cattle grazing - a revolutionary idea in Britain at the time. The spirit of the outback lingers along this section of the A82, where his ranch-style cattle shelters, built of poured concrete and originally painted yellow, are still familiar landmarks." One of 2 well known similar buildings beside the A82 north of Fort William. A grey Fergie?? |
