Originally described as accurately as is possible, except I think 3 ton is a bit too light for one of those BR containers. -- Last edit: 2017-10-02 11:49:44 |

There was I believe no lighter tractor unit based on the 3-tonner, my error. As 'simple trucks ratings are for the short wheelbase models were... 1955-1959 Austin/Morris FE (Austin Series III/Morris) '503' 5-Ton 120" w/base 1955-1959 BMC FE '701' 7-Ton 120" w/base (BMC grille Series III) For a tractor unit the ratings are higher; probably 6-7 tons (based on 5-ton simple truck) and 8-9 ton (for the 7-ton base chassis). British Railways apparently had lighter Austin Loadstar tractor units but these would be unique for their lighter deliveries. edit: BMC/Austin-Morris used the same 5-ton '503' and 7-ton '701' designations for the tractor units, although the tractor-trailer unit would be considerably higher (but not specified) a result of the rather loose ratings used at the time. Default to Austin FE perhaps? -- Last edit: 2017-10-02 14:45:15 |
