83-88 trim, so not 1989. |

On what basis? Does this W201 NOT have the darker lower cladding? A styling change introduced to Europe in 1988 (MY 1989 in marketing) and later to this market in 1989. If one is not using strictly EU-market standards to apply to vehicles sold as exports in North America, then you cannot do so regarding other markets, where MB is already distributed, marketed, and sold locally. Especially if they have staggered releases, that differ from the domestic market. Not every car in this specific market has definitively been grey-imported from Europe, so that is making assumptions. (based on previous edits) Otherwise I will call it for what it is, as you would not take such a stance with a Gulf area nation. It is a double standard, to assume everything is grey market in this case and not assume similar in other genres. |

I think you've got things slightly confused. The darker lower cladding and thin beltline trim were features of the original 83-88 version, whereas the 89+ version received fully painted and bigger cladding, which this car does not have. I never assumed anything, I'm just going by what I can see, and I apply the year ranges set by the manufacturer (as usually shown in the VIN), whereas secondary year ranges/registration dates set by specific markets are of less interest to me. |
