This is a Hillman Minx Californian hardtop coupe. It could be a Mark VII of 1954 or a Mark VIII of 1955.This is difficult to tell without seeing the front grille. The Mark VII was the last sidevalve engine Hillman , engine replaced by an overhead valve unit in 1955. Hillman Californians were among the first European hardtop coupes though mainly produced for the US market. Survivors and even period pictures of these cars are extremely rare today. So this is quite an interesting document. Note the nice two-tone green colour scheme |

Hm, it seems my old comments went missing. The Mk.VII and Mk.VIII models were distinguishable by their engines (difficult to see from this angle ), by the radiator grill (again no luck) and by the horn ring in the steering wheel (good luck third time!). I don't see a ring in this image (was made of chrome, not too difficult to spot when it is there). That makes this car a Mk.VII model, which was built from Oct.'53 to Oct.'54. For comparison see: http://www.sa.hillman.org.au/BBrown.htm |

Yes, it is strange, sometimes comments seem to disappear... There is maybe a bug somewhere... |

The grey car in front of the Minx could be a Frazer Manhattan Hardtop of 1951. If it is this would be a VERY rare shot! |

Unfortunately Alexander, I cannot check for better view, the DVD is in my other home...next time (15days around) I 'll think to see if we can have another picture where this mysterious grey car would appear? |

I just checked it, and it´s an Oldsmobile Super 88 just like the one owned by the President of Plastac, this one is grey even on the roof though. But it´s two cars involved for this scene, just prior to this picture the man driving the Olds is actually sitting in a 1955 Pontiac.. |

Concerning the Hillman Californian ,I can agree with Alexander that it is a Mark VII built between october 1953 and october 1954. However this is still considered as a Minx of the model year 1954 and not of the model year 1953.The same applies fo most American cars whose new models were launched in october/november before the Motor show season. The Minxes and Californians of model year 1953 had a shorter trunk. The car parked in front of the Californian is an Oldsmobile Super 88 from 1951 |

Roy Hudd drove a similar car to this in the BBC series based on Dennis Potter's play Lipstick on my Collar. He was required to drive it into a brick wall and "write it off". That was a heart-wrenching moment - as I drove a similar model at the time and loved it! Best car I ever owned. A real "crumpet catcher". |
