Actually ingo is correct. Opel had the initial design responsibility for the J-car world car project, I worked for Fisher Body at the time on the doors. The rear-drive U-car Ascona was superseded by the front-wheel drive 1982 J-car Ascona and Fisher in the US had the problem of reworking most or all of the body components to use inch thread sizes based on Opels metric drawings. The body-in-white design was initiated purley as an Opel project. Within 6 months of Opel starting the US car divisions were on board and it became a 'GM-world car' with instructions that the design was to be fully interchangeable on both overseas and GM-domestic platforms. Unfortunately, gradually some of the US and European design details diverged for economic reasons. |

Can I have your source for that? The press packet I have for the 82 Cavalier says it will hit select showrooms in early August 1981 with the remainder of dealerships by the end of the year. Well we all know how wikipedia is, and btw the article you quoted says the Cavalier began PRODUCTION not INTRODUCTION in March of 1981, but I will check page 73 of "Ward's Automotive Yearbook 1982" myself to see what it says |
