Continental Mark IV or Mark V |
◊ 2007-07-26 17:12 |
Seems to be the same Mark V as another picture in this series. Both have left rear hubcap missing and a Taurus parked behind them. What are the odds? |

changed it for the Pontiac since the Lincoln was already there. |

Sunbird or J2000 ? |
◊ 2007-07-26 21:27 |
I'd say it's a '82 J2000 by the age of the license plate. |

Very ugly car! |

Finally an Opel Ascona C-derivate with a Firebird-mouth. |
◊ 2009-11-22 20:54 |
Technically the Ascona C was derived from the Cavalier/J2000, not vice versa. |

Actually ingo is correct. Opel had the initial design responsibility for the J-car world car project, I worked for Fisher Body at the time on the doors. The rear-drive U-car Ascona was superseded by the front-wheel drive 1982 J-car Ascona and Fisher in the US had the problem of reworking most or all of the body components to use inch thread sizes based on Opels metric drawings. The body-in-white design was initiated purley as an Opel project. Within 6 months of Opel starting the US car divisions were on board and it became a 'GM-world car' with instructions that the design was to be fully interchangeable on both overseas and GM-domestic platforms. Unfortunately, gradually some of the US and European design details diverged for economic reasons. |

indeed, the T-car was the same as well (being an Opel first) -- Last edit: 2009-11-23 00:52:26 |

Odd then that the Cavalier and J2000 were the first J-cars introduced. |

'83 Pontiac 2000 according to Calif. smog test site. |

How do you figure that? The Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, Buick Skyhawk, Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac J2000, Opel Ascona C, Vauxhall Cavalier, Holden Camira, and Chevrolet Monza were all released simultaneously in August of 1981. :kiki: -- Last edit: 2009-11-23 09:36:25 |

The Chevrolet Cavalier was released in March of 1981 as a 1982 model. Other J-bodies followed suit in August of 1981. -- Last edit: 2009-11-23 12:42:44 |

Can I have your source for that? The press packet I have for the 82 Cavalier says it will hit select showrooms in early August 1981 with the remainder of dealerships by the end of the year. But I really does not matter which one was released first as the comment was that it was DESIGNED by Opel not released by Opel first. -- Last edit: 2009-11-23 13:20:17 |

My source is J-body.org: http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=28&i=10271&t=10258 And my comment was that I can find no sources that state Opel did design it, and the idea that they did is odd to me since the Chevrolet version was the first released. |

As a member of J-body.org for 9 years I have to say that the information there is not always accurate. I will have to take The word of the GM literature that I have over J-body.org |

The Wikipedia article on the J-body also lists the Cavalier and J2000 as being introduced in March of 1981, and lists page 73 of "Ward's Automotive Yearbook 1982" as a source. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_J_platform -- Last edit: 2009-11-23 23:06:13 |

Well we all know how wikipedia is, and btw the article you quoted says the Cavalier began PRODUCTION not INTRODUCTION in March of 1981, but I will check page 73 of "Ward's Automotive Yearbook 1982" myself to see what it says |
