Ford Thames 400E. I'd prefer the T-Bird in the garage. |

If plate is genuine, it's 1965 so likely to be Ford rather than Thames. Thames brand dropped in March 65 so renamed Ford until production end in Aug 65. |

If the plate is genuine, the van is DVLA-registered as a 1965 Ford, NOT Thames. Either way, the van could be described as a Ford Thames, couldn't it? |

They often are, but not strictly accurate in UK. Thames brand until March 65, then Ford afterwards - badges on front panel changed from one to t'other at that point, never had both. Similar thing at same point changed Thames 307E Van to Ford, adding Anglia to model name, and to Trader trucks. More confused for export markets/overseas builds where Thames name didn't have same impact. Some were just Ford, others Ford Thames, both before and after March 65. Several permutations used locally, which we probably haven't fully sussed out. What d'you read the plate as? |

Regardless of all other factors, for simplicity and consistency, if a vehicle is DVLA-registered as a Ford, I will call it a Ford and, if the vehicle is also a Thames, I will call it a Ford Thames. I read the plate as DDN381C. |

DDN 381C comes up as blue Ford van registered Nov 65, so Ford secure here. If you want consistency, follow this site's system, not automatically what DVLA may throw up. If you use Ford Thames or Duck-Billed Platypus, it will be corrected. |

I was not referring to this site, I was referring to my own records, which I can adopt any approach I choose. |

Well in that case you might as well know these 400Es came as Duck-Billed Platypus 10cwt, Duck-Billed Platypus 12cwt and Duck-Billed Platypus 15cwt, with the only way of splitting them being a very close view of small numbering on the front badge. We default to 10cwt for simplicity, unless other evidence available. |

The vehicles were known as the 10/12cwt, or the 15cwt, the 10/12 being one model, not two. https://heritagemachines.com/guides/the-versatile-thames-400e-range/ Link to "archive.commercialmotor.com" https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233562483057 -- Last edit: 2023-09-26 12:40:07 |
