Late 54 plate. See this 1954 Fowler Challenger III RNLI - PLA 561. |

so the plate doesn't reveal ID ? the David Brown TUG has very distinct metal sheet around the cockpit but that part is not visible here to know for sure if it is David Brown or not Link to "www.yorkshireairmuseum.org" |

Only if the vehicle is still in existence and registered with the British Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. However, PLA does stand for Port of London Authority, as shown on the vehicle, so the plate letters could have been reserved, although it is not mentioned in the Newall "Bible".. -- Last edit: 2014-05-07 23:49:11 |

It's a farm tractor-based tug. It's not a Ford. |

Doesn't it have the David Brown air cleaner? |

doesn't that one look more like Fordson and color too ? Link to "image.nettix.fi" |

There were basically no Fordson airport tugs like this and no Ford airport tugs after the N-Series and this about has to be a David Brown, it seems to me. The air cleaner doesn't seem to be usual height and location for a David Brown air cleaner, but it could have been relocated due to the board on the side of the engine. |

I'm convinced by lightninboy's explanation, with the close-fitting mud-guards overall size of wheels and its more than likely that a government or public body authority would modify a David Brown Taskmaster shortly after their war-time purchase in large numbers, rather than use a different tractor or tug. A tug and agriculture tractor must differ in many small details, so a Taskmaster is more likely. Also the relocation of the air-cleaner and removal of the shroud is explained by the large horizontal beams connecting the front and rear sections used for pushing dock-side loads around. /vehicle_102981-David-Brown-VIG-1C-Taskmaster.html /vehicle_697059-David-Brown-VIG-1C-Taskmaster.html |

The design of the rear wheel and multiple towing eyes (both seen on youtube) are the same as the Taskmaster here... http://ccmv.aecsouthall.co.uk/p1000534667/h244E966B#h2e917c02 The civilian version David Brown VIG/1C introduced in 1953 (CM Archive) with an air-cleaner intake position behind the engine similar to that in the movie. -- Last edit: 2015-12-08 19:57:32 |
