I agree. Though it's surprising how the roof line isn't nearly as pronounced as you would expect. It made me think twice.

I had other shots where the coupe profile is prominent. Plus 3500 on side badge, I'd go for Rover P5B 3500

Plus:

"In the 1971 British gangster thriller, "Villain", the Rover "star" is a grey P5B coupe with a black roof (HXC 802 H) and features prominently"

In the backgound on left is a mk1 Short wheel base Ford Transit V4 - rarer sliding door model, and a mk1 Ford Cortina on the right, but can't tell whether it is an early or late one because I can't see the aeroflow vents (or lack of them) on the rear C-pillars

This is likely to have been supplied by the Rover Car Company as many of its press fleet cars (including the launch model Range Rovers) had 'XC' plates.

This designator was often used by Rover in the 1960's, opposed to the more regularly seem 'AC' 'UE' and 'WD' Warwickshire plates. In fact, 'XC' was re-allocated from London CC to Warwickshire CC from 1964-74 and many British Leyland era press cars, especially Rovers and Triumphs were seen sporting them.

The sheer volume of air time that this car received equates almost to an advertisement, although one may question whether Rover would have been keen to attract such a tasty demographic as Mr Dakin in real life as the car was more suited to Bank Managers than Bank Blaggers!

*XC was officially transferred to Solihull in 1964, largely (but not entirely) for the benefit of Rover.

marsh wrote XC .. This London designator was often used by Rover to fool the motoring press by registering its cars in London, rather than Solihull

XC was always Solihull issue. Do you mean London combinations like VB - eg YVB 153H/160H for Range Rover launch?? - eg http://www.range-rover-classic.com/Home/land-rover-brochures/range-rover-1970-s .
