It's a 1982 or 1983 ( by the Y-suffix reg. ) 280E [W123]. These headlights combined with these specific bumpers identify it. They were also used by the 280, but in 1982 it wasn't produced anymore. |

I'm wondering a bit, why a Mercedes-Taxi shall not have a diesel-engine, but then I remembered, that in Great Britain regular fuel is cheaper than diesel (was this also a fact in the past?), so this can be the reason. |

Ingo, this is true but the difference is so slight that it's still cheaper overall to use Diesel. 'Black cabs' and Eurotaxis (Sevel-Nord based taxis or MB Vitos) are invariably Diesels and many minicabs (private hire cars) e.g. Mondeos, 406s etc. are too. My guess is that this is a private car that's been pressed into service as a taxi. |

It also can be a Diesel-W 123, where just the front lamps and/or the bumpers were changed. After several hundreds of thousands or taxi-kilometers it would not be unusual. |
