As William Bushnell Stout said, “simplicate and add more lightness”. Unfortunately, although Chapman heard it, many others didn’t.

Interesting history here. Colin Chapman's 2nd creation (and the first to get the Lotus name, as his first car was just Austin Seven Special until later retro-titled as Lotus Mk.1). Only one Mk.II built - A7 chassis with Ford oily bits - still around, never restored but running and does event demos.

"By early 1957 it had returned to the mainland UK where it became a feature in the Boulting Brothers monochrome British film comedy “Brothers in Law”. Accompanied by various back-fires and general mechanical loudness, character Charles Poole (portrayed by actor Nicholas Parsons) is the proud owner of LJH 702 which appears at first as a bit of a wreck. But Charles lovingly works on his little car throughout the film to the amusement of his trainee lawyer friend Henry Marshall (Richard Attenborough). Talking about Charles’ obsession with his car (and his apparent lack of interest in female company) Marshall famously says in the film:

As far as old Charles is concerned, sex has been supplanted by the internal combustion engine. I’ve never known a fellow who could get so worked up over a couple of big ends.”

But the film ends more than happily for Charles as he is last seen heading of on honeymoon in a by now much more functional looking LJH 702 with a newly acquired fine coat of (red?) paint, having snatched the hand of pretty actress Jill Adams from his unsuspecting friends."
