1968-1971 144. Volvos were assembled in Melbourne but I'm not sure between which years. |

As far as I can tell from fuzzy book reference, discussions between Volvo and Motor Producers Ltd (owned by VW) started in 1965 for assembly at their Clayton plant in a Melbourne suburb in Victoria, the main factory for local Beetles. Volvo builds started about 1970, with Clayton also gaining assembly contracts for Mercedes trucks and Datsun cars. Nissan bought Clayton from VW in 1976, and VW builds then stopped although Volvo builds continued into "the late 1980s" - book was published 1987, and does not list which models were involved. One unusual feature of Aus-build 144 may have been a locally developed power steering set up |
