SOCONY=Standard Oil Company of New York. Diamond-shaped sign in background at right is similar to this one: http://www.artzooks.com/Corbis/CB004425/ |

Auburn 1927-30. Difficult to tell exactly as the style changed very little. Drum headlights would suggest probably 1927. |

I heard an interesting story about this car @ the Antique Automobile Club of America's Fall Hershey swap meet many years ago. I was talking to a man who had some Auburn items for sale and the movie came up. He had been the owner of the car in question at the time the movie was being shot and had rented his freshly restored green Auburn 8 sedan to the production company. Apparently he wasn't allowed on set, as someone decided that the car had to be blue and did a quick & dirty job of painting it, managing to get overspray all over many things, including the interior. It took the heart right out of the owner as far as this car went, having already spent considerable time & money on the restoration. He was never properly compenated and sold the car, at a loss I'm sure. I have since met people who have had much better experiences renting antique cars to th movies, but if you are considering it, beware. -- Last edit: 2012-07-05 22:15:50 |

Can anyone grab a screenshot of the green sedan in the background when Gatsby shows Nick his garage? It's the same car, with its beautiful, multi-shade green paint from the restoration it had enjoyed before director Jack Clayton picked it to be Tom Buchanan's car in the movie. (See shoveldog's comment above; I concur and sympathize.) Quite a shame, as it was stunning - inside and out - before the blue paint. I guess it got the blue re-paint because F. Scott Fitzgerald said Tom had a blue coupe. (They couldn't make it into a coupe but they could make it blue. But did it really matter?) BTW, the other car in the picture of what's identified as a ’26 Chrysler 70 hearse is the SAME Auburn, playing a THIRD role in the movie. Once they were done using it as Tom's car it got, evidently, an even quickie-er black paint job so it could be the car that Nick & Mr. Gatz ride in in the funeral. NOTE- Another screenshot needed: Look closely at the car's right-rear quarter window, visible over the right shoulder of one of the characters riding and talking in the car. You'll see some black overspray - paint that got past the paper that apparently hadn't stuck well to the tape that had been applied to mask the edge of the window. I wasn't in England, where that scene was shot, but the sloppy masking/paintwork (& the fact the overspray hadn’t been cleaned off) indicate to me that they were rushed. Also, notice that in the funeral procession the car has its “Madam X”-style sunvisor in place. I noticed it wasn’t there in some of the scenes shot in RI and NYC because the characters in the front seat needed to be seen. (Check the shot with the dog-vendor near the Queensboro Bridge; the framework is there but the visor is missing.) |

Many questions answered here! The shade of blue on this car is completely wrong for the era. |

"BTW, the other car in the picture of what's identified as a ’26 Chrysler 70 hearse is the SAME Auburn, playing a THIRD role in the movie." It has a completely different body, though. The casket area of the hearse shown is very narrow, a lot narrower than the Auburn in this listing, for starters. |

In fact, ryantee82 is right. The car in the funeral procession is not the same Auburn that played two other roles. I should have confined my remarks to cars I actually worked with, in person. I never got to England and saw this Auburn firsthand, as I did the other one. But yes, the gorgeous green Auburn in the background of the Gatsby-and-Nick garage scene really IS the car with the so-so blue paint job used in many scenes. -- Last edit: 2020-08-23 19:51:47 |
