This type of Volga was shown in Britain around 1971. Does anybody have more details? |

@Misha: here you have a Belgian Moskwitsch: http://www.icmesa.com/tinhunter/Houthalen/Moskvitch.jpg It stood there: http://www.icmesa.com/tinhunter/Houthalen/THAHouthalen.htm (unfortunately totally cleared off in the year 2000). -- Last edit: 2009-02-23 22:01:38 |

I've heard that the ones assembled in Belgium had Perkins or Land Rover diesel engines installed & were mainly used as taxis. |

How can one tell if it's Belgian assembly (on the outside, without looking at importer's type-plate in engine compartment)? Are they the only ones with Volga fender badge in roman alphabet letters, and Russian production only has fender badges in Cyrillic letters? As for the diesel: I'm not sure about Perkins & Land Rover diesel, if it only was in M21 or still in early M24? I do know M24 could be ordered with Indenor Peugeot diesel. These Volga cars arrived without engine from Russia, gearbox was delivered separate. ScaldiaVolga (Belgian importer in Brussels) then installed diesel engine. I remember seeing them as taxi in my home town here in Belgium, late 70s / early 80s. But you could also buy them as private car, just like any other car. For a "russian exotic car", they were quite popular (of course not in sales numbers like Ford, Opel, Renault, etc..., but still, every once in a while you could see them. Now they are all gone, sadly...) |

Diesel should be added as Extra. Info. [24-76] as Chassis/Code. -- Last edit: 2016-10-17 18:46:00 |

Diesel versions had a separate inscription with the type of engine at the rear deck. On this car, it is missed. |

Only 1984+ versions has this badge. Pre-79 cars had just 'Volga' badge on the back (sometimes) and on the front wings. Also, all Belgium Volgas has Diesel Engines, and it doesn't matter if has it 'Diesel' badge or not... So, Diesel SHOULD be added as Extra Info. |

I was just looking at the boot / trunk lid, and it looks like a "country of origin" oval had been affixed to theleft hand side as there looks to be wear / residue where it had been. I remember seeing this onscreen, and it was impressive, at least here in the USA, to see a Soviet car in any Western production. There were some Chaikas in the same Cold War era 1982 Clint Eastwood film "Firefox". Incidentally, not positive despite watching the clip, but is the right brake light out? The brake light might be out, but "Russian clocks are ALWAYS correct!" -- Last edit: 2022-05-08 03:04:27 |
