Twelve or Sixteen. Sixteen only made post WW2 but not visually different from Twelve unless you open the bonnet. Twelve is a sidevalve engine, or put your foot down, Sixteen is ohv and reasonable for its time, Twelve was gutless. -- Last edit: 2023-10-18 20:51:11 |

The Cardiff-issue registration mark seems to pre-date the car. That said, judging by the spacing on the plate, there may be one letter missing? -- Last edit: 2023-10-18 21:03:18 |

I think that the plate is no guide to the age of the car. Since it was introduced in September 1939, not many prewar Twelves saw the light of day. The post war 16 was a much better proposition. A 2.2 litre ohv engine which lived on in the A70s gave it a better performance. On numbers built the subject car may well be a Sixteen. In a 1955 movie, these cars were, at that time, just cheap transport to be driven until they fell apart. -- Last edit: 2023-10-19 08:31:22 |

How does a gleaming white bonnet contribute to an effective black-out livery?? |

full size plate: I can't tell if it's just daimlere20's power of suggestion or if there's really a C/G missing at the beginning. |

On numbers built, I shall post this as a 1945 Austin 16. -- Last edit: 2023-10-19 20:52:57 |

Did Britain not stop civilian production for the war effort? |

1939-45. We appear to be using ‘45 as the start date for the Austin 16, so I have followed that. Certain cars remained in limited production for essential users. -- Last edit: 2023-10-19 21:04:50 |
