Old Renault? |

More likely a Panhard-Levassor from about 1895. Early Renaults were much smaller than this and they only built their first experimental model in 1899. |

I agree that it looks like a Panhard & Levassor, e.g. the small wheel on the side (parking brake?) were seen on them. The shape and the size of the chains on the rear wheels look like a (British made) Daimler, though... Not sure yet. |

This is England, so perhaps more likely to be British than French? Although the one car on the Titanic was a Renault, so those early French cars may have been more popular than I realise. These are Jeremy Clarkson's ancestors on his mother's side, owners of the Kilner Glass company, which made them a fortune. So unlike most people in this series, Clarkson mainly goes in search of the billions of inheritance he must have. About this car he says: "I know they owned a car just after the first cars were made... in like... 1901. Which is the equivalent of owning your own jet plane now." -- Last edit: 2008-07-24 22:46:40 |

In those early times French cars, and specially Panhard & Levassor, werer by far the most produced cars in the world... |

Well, it's just that there's that historic rivalry with the French and Brits tended to prefer a British built car. Except Clarkson of course. |

I would disagree with the comment about Brits preferring a British car. That may have been true later on, particularly after WW1, but in the early days - pre 1900 - there was not much choice in British made and most cars available were French and there was always something special about owning something French. I know it is odd given that there has always been some animosity between Britain and France. Like DynaMike I am still not totally sure what this car is. No doubt one of us will find a pic of something the same. -- Last edit: 2008-07-25 04:28:34 |

1899 ( English) Daimler 6hp four seater as spotted by the front end ( bonnet layout/radiator and roller chains) .It was powered by a rear mounted 2 cylinder engine with hot tube ignition that drove through the gearbox to a cross shaft from which the rear wheels were driven via roller chains. |

... as this example (various bodies were available). Link to "www.ingenious.org.uk" Also another Daimler 6hp was car involved in the first motor accident in Britain in July 1899. Edwin Sewell and Major Richer were killed as the rear wheel of their 6hp Daimler collapsed and they were thrown from their car on Grove Hill, Harrow. |
