You'd be surprised. East Germany suspended official exports of cars to the BRD in 1969 as they were simply not selling at all. According to one West German tester, the little Wartburg could have almost reached up to the likes of Glas 1700 and BMW Neue Klasse, if it weren't for the horrendous stench and noise of the single-liter engine.
